FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Licensing rules come from Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) and can change. We summarise them in plain language — always confirm with mpi.mb.ca.
Getting started
Do I need a learner licence before my first lesson?
Yes. To drive on public roads you need a valid Class 5 Learner (5L) licence, which you get from MPI after passing the knowledge and vision tests. If you do not have one yet, we are happy to talk through what to expect — but the knowledge test is booked with MPI.
How many lessons will I need?
It depends on your experience and how much you practise between lessons. Many complete beginners take 10–15 hours with an instructor plus regular supervised practice. After your first lesson we give you an honest estimate.
Where do lessons start?
Most lessons start and end at your home, school or workplace anywhere inside the Perimeter Highway. Locations just outside the city can be arranged for a small travel fee.
Can my parent or partner sit in the back?
Yes, with your permission. Many supervising drivers find it helpful to hear how we explain things so practice at home matches what we teach.
What kind of car will I learn in?
A recent automatic compact car with a passenger-side brake, winter tires from November to April and clear signage.
Road test
When can I take my road test?
MPI sets the rules. In the Graduated Driver Licensing program, you generally need to hold a 5L licence for at least nine months before taking the Class 5 road test. Check mpi.mb.ca for current requirements.
Do you book my road test for me?
No — you book directly with MPI and pay any MPI fees. Tell us your date and time and we will plan your final lessons and the car rental around it.
Can I use your car for the road test?
Yes. Our road-test car rental includes pick-up, a 60-minute warm-up drive and the car for the test, subject to availability. Please give us at least 48 hours' notice.
What if I don't pass?
It happens, and it is fixable. Bring your result sheet to a mock test and we will work on exactly the items that cost you marks.
Newcomers to Canada
Can I drive in Manitoba on my licence from another country?
New residents can usually drive on a valid licence for a limited time only. MPI states the rules — for many drivers the period is three months after becoming a resident. Check mpi.mb.ca or ask an MPI Service Centre about your situation.
Can I exchange my foreign licence without tests?
It depends on where your licence was issued. Manitoba has exchange agreements with some jurisdictions; drivers from others usually take the knowledge and road tests. MPI decides, so please confirm with them before booking lessons.
What do refresher lessons cover that I don't already know?
Mostly rules and habits: four-way stops, school zones, pedestrian priority, shoulder checks and winter driving. We start with an assessment so you only pay for what you actually need.
Do you teach in languages other than English?
Ask us when you book — we will tell you which lesson languages are currently available. Road tests in Manitoba are conducted in English or French — ask MPI about language options.
Winter, payments & cancellations
Do you teach through the winter?
Yes — winter is a big part of learning to drive here. We adapt routes to conditions and reschedule free of charge when Environment and Climate Change Canada issues a warning such as a blizzard or extreme cold warning for Winnipeg.
How do prices and taxes work?
Prices are in Canadian dollars and shown before taxes. GST (5%) and Manitoba RST (7%) are added as applicable to each service or rental. Your receipt shows each tax separately.
How do I pay?
Debit, Visa, Mastercard or Interac e-Transfer. Packages can be paid in two or three instalments as shown on the pricing page.
What is your cancellation policy?
Please give at least 24 hours' notice to reschedule free of charge. Late cancellations are charged 50% of the lesson price and no-shows the full price. Full details are in our Terms.
Newcomers: MPI's New or returning to Manitoba page explains licence exchanges and testing for drivers from other provinces and countries.
