About this lesson
Highway driving on the prairies is fast, flat and often long. We cover the Perimeter Highway, divided highways and two-lane rural roads, with time for a dusk segment when daylight allows.
Lesson plan
- 1
On-ramps & merging
Building speed on the ramp, finding a gap and merging without braking.
- 2
Lane discipline
Keeping right, passing safely, and handling large trucks and wind gusts.
- 3
Two-lane highways
Judging oncoming traffic before passing, and when passing is not worth it.
- 4
Interchanges & exits
Reading signs early, exit lanes and adjusting speed for the ramp.
- 5
Night & fatigue
High beams, wildlife awareness and planning breaks on long drives.
Who it's for
- Drivers who avoid the Perimeter or highways
- Intermediate (5I) drivers planning a road trip

You'll leave with

Highway lessons may start and finish at a meeting point near the Perimeter to keep more of the time on the highway.
